The park is fortunate in possessing numerous rivers, streams and hot springs which are reasons for the rich wildlife resources of the area. Gibe Riverhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gibe_River is one of the features of the park bordering to the south.
Key wildlife species include hippopotamus, Nile crocodile, greater kudu, water buck and other predators like Common hyena and jackals. The national park hosts various bird species.
The Park has an asphalt road connection with Addis Ababa, a distance of 170 km southwest of Addis Ababa on the main Addis Ababa- Wolkite- Jimma Road. The Park has four-wheel drive roads, but most parts of the park are inaccessible by vehicle and on foot. There are only recommended potential camping grounds in the national park and economic hotels in Wolkite town, 20 km from Park headquarter. Desalegn Lodge is available in the cultural rural setting of the area, 45 km east of the park on the Wolkite-Butajira asphalt Road.
