Borena National Park

Borena National Park (formerly known as Yabello Wildlife Sanctuary in Borena Zone), located in the transition zone (the Borena foothills) between the Ethiopian Plateau and neighboring lowlands, includes Dida Hara, Dambala Dhibayu, Dida Sodda, Sarite, and Megadu separated blocks. It is one of the best places in Ethiopia to see Large Mammals like Grevy’s zebra, Burchell’s zebra, Grant’s gazelle, Gerenuk, Besia Oryx, and ungulates. The park is also a critically important place to sport bird diversity including the endemic Ethiopian Bush Crow, White Tailed Swallow, Prince Ruspoil’s Turaco, and Black Fronted Francolin.

Access and Accommodation

The park is located at a distance between 560 km (Yabelo) to 720 km (Magedo-Gamedo Mountain) from Addis Ababa, on the main Hawassa- Dilla-Yabello-Moyale road. It is also possible to arrive from Addis Ababa via Arba Minch- Konso- Yabello (Park HQ), covering a distance of 750 km by vehicle. The Arba Minch airport operates daily flights from Addis Ababa, 200 km from park headquarters. The Park encompasses various blocks, all visitors are recommended to contact the park headquarters situated in Yabelo town before any trip to the park. There are satellite camping grounds inside the park with their own camping equipment, food, water, cooking materials, and other necessary facilities. Also, some economic hotels are found in the nearby town of Yabelo.
